Weirdest Cupcake Flavors

The cupcake is traditionally made in chocolate and vanilla and they probably didn’t get fancy swirls of cream on top when they were first made.  The mini treat got its name because they were first baked in cups.  Food historians have yet to identify the origin of the small cakes but they do know that it started with rather dull ingredients which bakers used numbers with to remember.  It’s 1 cup butter, 1 cup milk, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups of flour, and 4 eggs.

In this modern age and time, bakers have created over-the-top varieties of the American favorite with fancy as well as funny names.  It has become a pop culture in the culinary world, spawning hundreds of self-trained bakers and cupcake bakeries around the world.  The cupcake is the only dessert that’s allowed to have odd ingredients.  Don’t judge these weird cupcakes until you’ve tasted them yourself because the buzz is that they’re pretty awesome.  Well, almost all of them are.

The friend chicken cupcake debuted at the LA Cupcake Challenge in 2011.  It’s a really smart way to combine waffles and fried chicken of a breakfast menu into a single dish of a cupcake. On the outside, it looks like a regular vanilla cupcake with buttery maple frosting but it will have a piece or two of deep fried chicken on the creamy topping.  Upon taking a bite on it, it will reveal more chicken pieces inside.

Seafood is something most people would never put in a dessert but this cupcake has salmon in it.  The baker thought of incorporating smoked salmon in the cake, giving it a sweet and salty contrast.  The creamy frosting had fresh chives, capers and more smoked salmon.  The ingredients used for the frosting are actually for tartar dips commonly served with salmon.  Salmon cupcakes may sound odd but they don’t taste that way at all.

If you’re having vampire issues in your home, maybe some garlic cupcakes would keep them away. Yes, trick them into having some mind-boggling garlic-flavored mini cakes.  The garlic is roasted first, and then added as the main ingredient .  It also has chocolate and coffee.  For a potent anti-vampire formula, beat some garlic powder into the cream cheese frosting.  If you don’t want to try baking these for fear of getting stabbed or sued, you can get an idea how garlic cupcakes would taste like by putting crushed garlic in your cocoa drink.  Yum or yuck?
