HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE LEMONADE

Sweltering in heat and sweat on a hot summer’s day? Chill out with this fantastic homemade lemonade recipe! It’s so simple, even children can make it—although they will need some help with preparing the syrup, one of the key ingredients.

INGREDIENTS:

6 to 8 lemons, enough to make one cup of pure lemon juice (Get big, fresh ones!)
Water (about 5 to 6 cups). Set aside one cup to use for the syrup.
1 cup sugar
A few slices of lemon, lime, orange, or other fruit, for garnish!

TOOLS:

Measuring cup
Saucepan
Big spoon or spatula
Knife
Strainer
Juicer (manual or electric powered)
Pitcher
Long-handled spoon or wire whisk, to use for stirring

STEPS:

1. First, make the syrup. Heat one cup of water and the sugar in a saucepan over low heat.

2. Once the sugar dissolves completely, remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool.

Note: Actually, you can buy bottled syrup from the supermarket, but I find the consistency of bottled syrup to be too thick and sticky. Besides, why spend more bucks when you can so easily make your own syrup at home?

Another note: If you plan to make a lot of lemonade this summer, you can prepare larger quantities of the syrup. Just follow the same ratio of one cup water to one cup sugar. Place the extra syrup in a container, close the lid tightly, and store in the refrigerator. This syrup should be used within one month.

5. Before slicing the lemons, roll them on a table or hard surface. This makes the juice easier to extract.

6. Use a knife to slice each lemon in half.

7. Juice each lemon half (manually or using an electric juicer).

8. Pour the lemon juice through a strainer into a pitcher of water, then dilute with four cups of water.

9. Add the syrup mixture and mix well using a spatula. Add more water if you feel that more is needed, to adjust the taste.

10. Pour lemonade into individual glasses filled with ice cubes. Add a straw and garnish with lemon or other fruit slices such as lime, orange, strawberry, or kiwi, if desired.

Now you’re ready to enjoy these cool glasses of refreshing lemonade with your family. I’ll bet you can’t have just one!
